An ex-Navy Flight Officer and journalist, Penton is a writer of military non-fiction, science fiction and poetry. He has written two novels, a collection of short stories and flash fiction, and poetry. He received a Bachelor of Science in business administration from The University of Maryland, and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from The University of Texas. Also a graduate of the Defense information School in Washington D.C., he served as a journalist and editor for Naval Activities, San Diego and also created the Hospital Ship Mercy newsletter and website. He has lived and worked across Asia and Europe throughout a full military career. He and his wife are heavily involved with dog rescue organizations and also volunteers as a creative writing teacher (see link above)​.
